As of today, the new finish on the front, sides and back of the headstock has had ample time to cure. So I've gone ahead and removed the masking tape, plastic wrap and black trash bag; and proceeded with final wet-sanding and polishing. The fretboard and frets have also been cleaned, and I must say that the fretboard appears to be genuine rosewood. Meanwhile, peering into the pickup cavities reveals a body cap of lighter-colored wood. Could it be maple?
