Hari Raya Greetings - 1 Syawal 1446 AH

It's March 31, 2025, and the first day of Aidil Fitri here in Malaysia. Today, allow me to share the Hari Raya greetings received so far. Some are from clients, others are from friends, and two are from former SMK Bukit Goh students whom I once taught back in the '80s.

Ovation Celebrity CS24-4 Rehab | Part 6

Commencing Work on the Ovation CS24-4

The time was finally upon me to get down to work, and I started off by dealing with that horrible mess of hardened glue you saw in Part 2 of this series. So, out came my smallest chisels and a razor blade. I had to work with the utmost care and not rush anything, lest I accidentally nick a fret or gouge the ovangkol fretboard.

No More Dried Glue

Following this, the truss rod was gradually tightened over the course of two days, by which time the fretboard was sufficiently level for fret evaluation. Subsequent checks with a fret rocker revealed four high frets - the 3rd, 8th, 10th and 19th. Spot leveling and recrowning was then carried out to address this discrepancy.

With the frets taken care of, it was the fretboard's turn to receive some attention. The crud and grime was so deeply embedded in the wood that a rag soaked in naphtha could not do much. And so, a scraping we once again did go; albeit with a a box cutter blade this time around.

At the time of writing, the first round of super glue and rosewood dust has just been laid down on the damaged area of the headstock. This particular repair will mirror the one I carried out on the Epiphone AJ-220SCE Acoustic. Stay tuned for further updates on this Ovation Celebrity CS24-4.

Looking Inside the Ovation CS24-4

Folks, we've just about covered the external features of this guitar, and I thought it'd be a great idea to take a peek at what's within the confines of its Spruce/Lyrachord® body. And so, down the soundhole goes my cell phone. And yes, I did remember to turn on the flash.

The first thing we see is the truss rod adjustment nut. It's located fairly deep inside the fretboard support block, making it extremely difficult to get a clear shot. Besides the fretboard support block, the only visible internal wooden components are the neck block, kerfing, underside of the solid spruce top, scalloped quartersawn top braces, and end block.

Introducing Lyrachord®

At the outset of this post, allow me to say a little about "Lyrachord," the unique man-made material used to construct the back and sides of this Ovation CS24-4. Ovation describes Lyrachord® as being "a high tech fiberglass composite material that can be precision-molded to any shape," such as the contoured sides and semi-parabolic back on this CS24-4.

Ovation CS24-4 | Left Side

Let's begin our journey with a close look at the left/upper side of this CS24-4. Besides the upper bout strap button, the left side also houses an Ovation OP-4CT Preamp. The OP-4CT comprises two components - a dedicated 9V battery box, and the preamp module itself.

Ovation CS24-4 | Rear End

Besides a strap button, there is nothing much to see at the rear end of this Ovation CS24-4. However, flipping the body over draws one's attention to the unique semi-parabolic shape of the Lyrachord® back. The back is also where the output jack socket is installed.

Ovation CS24-4 | Right Side

The main feature on the lower/right side of this guitar is a Venetian cutaway. It looks quite ordinary when viewed from above. However, in profile view, one immediately notices how the precision-molded Lyrachord® sides have imbued this cutaway with some really unique contours.

Ovation CS24-4 | Solid Spruce Top

According to Ovation, this CS24-4 features a solid spruce top. It's finished au naturel in clear gloss, something which offers greater protection than the "open pore" finishes that are all the rage nowadays. Top binding is single-ply ivory, and purfling, three-ply black/ivory/black. Also deserving special mention is the lovely soundhole rosette, comprising concentric ivory, black and pearloid circles.

Ovation CS24-4 | Ovangkol Bridge

The ovangkol bridge is unfinished, and is secured to the top with a combination of glue and two strategically-placed metal bolts. It's not that obvious at a glance, but closer inspection reveals two small circular ovangkol covers. These covers obviously hide the heads of the bolts. And, as this bridge is top-loading, there is no need for bridge pins. Strings are loaded from the back of the bridge, much like how one would string a stopbar tailpiece on a Les Paul or SG.
