Work Done
For starters, the truss rod cover on this 2009 Epiphone Les Paul Custom was missing. Now, I have lots of black pickguard material to spare. So, rather than source a brand new cover; I decided to fashion a homemade version. Next, the stock tune-o-matic bridge was too corroded to be saved, so it was replaced with a chrome plated Sung Il BM002 [Korean].
Meanwhile, we said sayonara to the stock BHCs and welcomed a new set of Wilkinson M Series open humbuckers. Other new components included Alpha A500K pots, 0.022uF poly tone caps, an Epiphone toggle switch; and Neutrik NYS229 output jack. Copper foil shielding was also added to the backs of the switch and control cavity covers.
As mentioned in
Part Two, this guitar suffers from fretting out and buzzing in the upper frets. A thorough check with a straight edge and Fret Rocker determined that the last 10 frets needed to be leveled and recrowned, a procedure known as "fret dressing." Last but not least, the nut was reprofiled to decrease the depth of the string slots.
