2009 Epiphone Les Paul Custom

I'll have to categorize this guitar under "another one that got away." My research indicates that it was built in October 2009 at the Qingdao Plant [Epiphone] in China. As received it was totally unplayable; having been submerged in flood waters and then left to rot. Welcome to the east coast, folks.

The good news was that both humbuckers were in working condition. Of particular interest was the neck humbucker. Someone had replaced the stock pickup with a DiMarzio DP156, also known as The Humbucker From Hell®. Nice touch, that.

Long story short, my repair proposal was rejected outright by the owner. He'd rather buy a new guitar and hang this Epiphone "on the wall." No kidding!

2    Setup

2.1    Confusion Regarding "Setup"

Take a look around the web, and you'll discover that no two guitar repair shops define the term "Setup" in exactly the same way. This has resulted in unnecessary confusion and misunderstanding regarding what "Setup" actually entails, a conundrum we are all too familiar with.

For example, potential clients frequently call for more information on various packages they've seen advertised by other repair shops, such as "Basic Setup," "Pro Setup" or "Full Setup." Fair enough. However, what's worrying is that the majority of these callers unrealistically expect "Setup" to cover anything and everything from fretwork to hardware and electronics servicing.

2.2    Defining "Setup" at CA Guitar Repair

Truth be told, dealing with the confusion and unrealistic expectations concerning "Setup" has proven to be both time-consuming and an exercise in futility. Let's set the record straight once and for all, then. At CA Guitar Repair, we offer only ONE "Setup" package which covers the following related tasks:

  • Restringing
  • String Stretching
  • Tuning Strings to Pitch
  • Truss Rod Adjustment
  • Minor Nut Adjustment
  • Neck Angle Adjustment
  • Intonation Adjustment
  • Bridge Height Adjustment/Action
  • Saddle Height Adjustment/Action
  • Saddle Height Adjustment/Radius
  • Tremolo Spring Tension Adjustment
  • Pickup Height Adjustment

2.3    Pre-Conditions for Setup

We will NOT be able to set up your instrument if any of the components involved are corroded, cruddy, not in working condition, damaged, and/or need to be repaired/replaced. For example, let's say the saddle height screws on your guitar are so rusty that they cannot be adjusted. In this case, we will have to service or replace these screws before setting up your guitar. In short, we can only set up your instrument if the the following components are in optimum condition and free from defects:

  • Neck
  • Neck Joint
  • Truss Rod
  • Fretboard
  • Nut
  • Frets
  • Tuners
  • String Retainers
  • Bridge Components

2.4    Areas NOT Covered Under "Setup"

"Setup" at CA Guitar Repair DOES NOT cover services such as cleaning and polishing, fixing structural problems, fretboard conditioning, refinishing, electronics checking, fretwork, hardware servicing and parts replacement; to mention a few.

We sincerely hope that by now, you would have gained a better understanding concerning what "Setup" at CA Guitar Repair covers, and what it does not. And so, with that out of the way, do continue reading, and discover just how CA Guitar Repair may be of assistance to you.

Partscaster Band-Aid | Part Two

In Part One, this Partscaster was introduced to readers. A "Band-Aid" minimum budget job was carried out to restore it to giggable condition, and here it is; folks.

Partscaster Band-Aid: Part One

When it came to me, this Partscaster had not been gigged in over a year, or more accurately; since the pandemic hit. The owner, a working musician, had just put it aside in a corner, nekkid to the elements; and left it to rot. Looking at the pictures below, I think you'll see what total neglect can do to an instrument.

The guitar had been put together using the neck from a Fender Japan ST-62 and a Squier body. The pickups were definitely Fender single-coils, judging from the batch number on the bottom of the bobbins. Electronics-wise, work had been done to meet Fender US specs: CTS pots, CRL switch, Switchcraft #11 jack; and vintage ceramic disc tone cap.

Rudimentary shielding had also been added by way of aluminum foil. Despite the overall cruddiness of these components, all except the CRL switch were fully functional. Thus said, the electronics were given a thorough servicing, and the CRL replaced with a Gotoh DM-50.

I call this a "Band-Aid" job as there were severe budgetary constraints; mainly due to the owner not having worked since the world fell apart. But now he had a couple gigs lined up, and needed his guitar as soon as possible. And so the best I could do was restore what could be saved, and replace what couldn't.

The vintage-style bent steel saddles were rusted to death, and actually disintegrated when I tried to clean them. So out they went, and in their place; I put in a brand-new set of reasonably-priced Korean steel block saddles. In Part Two, you'll be able to view the fruits of my labor; and I hope you like what you see.
